When you walk into Corton Lodge, a beautifully restored 1913 church nestled beside the Elk River in West Virginia, you’re stepping into more than just a lodge — you’re stepping into a story. A story that’s been carved, crafted, and even etched into stone.
Each suite welcomes guests with a custom laser-etched tile floor, designed with care and meaning — a reflection of place, history, and heartfelt craftsmanship.
The Bell Tower Suite: Country Roads
The Bell Tower Suite’s entryway features a full road map of West Virginia, laser-etched into ceramic tile with every town carefully detailed. At the heart of the map, a small symbol marks the exact location of Corton Lodge.
Etched across the surface is the beloved lyric:
“Country roads take me home to the place I belong.”
This installation includes 26 individual tiles, each taking nearly three hours to burn. That’s more than 80 hours of etching, not counting the design work that came before it. Every moment spent creating this floor was guided by purpose — to offer a welcome that guests could see and feel beneath their feet.
The Riverview Suite: A Poetic Tribute
In the Riverview Suite, the entryway bears the State Seal of West Virginia — a proud reminder of the state’s birth on June 20, 1863, now celebrated annually as West Virginia Day.
Surrounding the seal is a poem written by Ryan Stamm, the visionary behind Corton Lodge. The poem speaks of the land, the journey, and the love that brought this old church back to life. It frames the seal like a reverent whisper — quiet, lasting, true.
This floor, too, consists of 26 tiles, each taking three hours to laser etch. Together, the two entryways represent over 150 hours of hands-on craftsmanship.
